V-up tutorial
The V-up is a more advanced ab exercise in which the straight arms and legs rise simultaneously so the body forms a V shape. It intensely works the entire rectus abdominis and hip flexors while improving core coordination and control, making it suitable for intermediate trainees.
How to perform
- Lie on your back on a mat with legs straight and arms extended overhead.
- Brace your core and keep your lower back close to the floor.
- Lift your straight legs and torso off the floor at the same time.
- Reach your hands toward your toes so your body forms a V, balancing on your glutes.
- Pause briefly at the top.
- Lower your arms and legs slowly and under control back to the floor.
Breathing: Exhale as you rise into the V and inhale as you lower.
Key tips
- Arms and legs should move together and meet at the top.
- If it's too hard, bend the knees slightly.
- At the bottom, hover the arms and legs just off the floor to maintain tension.
Common mistakes
- Throwing the arms and legs up with momentum
- Arching the lower back on the way down
- Dropping to the floor fast and uncontrolled
Safety: People with low back pain or beginners should start with a single-leg V-up or reverse crunch.
