Standing Barbell Calf Raise tutorial

The standing barbell calf raise strengthens the calf muscles, especially the gastrocnemius, by rising onto the toes with a barbell across the upper back. Besides calf strength, it also challenges balance and ankle stability.

How to perform

  1. Set the barbell on your upper back in a squat rack and step out.
  2. Stand with feet hip-width apart, ideally with the balls of your feet on a plate or low step.
  3. Keep your knees straight but not locked and brace your core.
  4. Raise your heels as high as possible and rise onto your toes.
  5. Squeeze your calves at the top and pause briefly.
  6. Lower your heels slowly until you feel a gentle stretch in your calves.
Breathing: Exhale as you rise onto your toes and inhale as you lower.

Key tips

  • Keep pressure over the big and second toes so your ankles don't roll out.
  • Full range of motion matters more than heavy weight.
  • If balance is hard, do it inside the squat rack or on a Smith machine.

Common mistakes

  • Fast, bouncy reps with no pause at the top or bottom.
  • Bending the knees to help with the legs.
  • Letting the ankles roll outward or inward as you rise.
Safety: People with Achilles tendon problems or poor balance should start light or use the Smith version, and stop if they feel pain at the back of the heel.
