Smith Machine Calf Raise tutorial
The Smith machine calf raise strengthens the calves while the fixed bar path takes care of balance, putting full focus on the calf muscles. It lets you use heavier weight more safely than the free barbell version.
How to perform
- Place a plate or low step under the Smith machine bar.
- Step under the bar, set it across your upper back and release it from the hooks.
- Place the balls of your feet on the edge of the step with your heels hanging free.
- Lower your heels until you feel a stretch in your calves.
- Rise onto your toes as high as you can and squeeze your calves.
- Pause briefly and lower your heels slowly; lock the bar when the set is done.
Breathing: Exhale as you rise and inhale as you lower.
Key tips
- Set the safety stops at a suitable height.
- Pause 1 to 2 seconds at the bottom to remove the bounce.
- Changing toe direction can slightly shift emphasis between the inner and outer calf.
Common mistakes
- Using a short range with only a small heel movement.
- Bending the knees as you rise.
- Placing the feet too far forward or back relative to the bar.
Safety: People with Achilles or foot-sole pain should start light without a deep stretch and stop if pain appears.
