Dumbbell Wrist Curl tutorial

The dumbbell wrist curl is an isolation exercise for the wrist flexors on the inner forearm that also improves grip strength. It is easy to do at home with a light dumbbell and helps performance in pulling movements.

How to perform

  1. Sit on the edge of a bench and hold a light dumbbell with your palm facing up.
  2. Rest your forearm on your thigh or the bench so your wrist hangs over the edge.
  3. Let your wrist bend slowly downward.
  4. Curl your wrist to lift the dumbbell as high as possible.
  5. Pause briefly at the top and squeeze your forearm.
  6. Lower the dumbbell slowly and switch hands after the set.
Breathing: Exhale as you curl your wrist up and inhale as you lower.

Key tips

  • Move only the wrist and keep the forearm fixed on the support.
  • Higher reps (15 to 20) with light weight work well for the forearms.
  • You may let the dumbbell roll slightly toward your fingers at the bottom for more range.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting the forearm off the support and using the biceps.
  • Choosing a weight that is too heavy and jerking it.
  • Using a very short range without fully lowering the wrist.
Safety: People with wrist pain, carpal tunnel symptoms or elbow injuries should start very light and stop if they feel pain or tingling.
