Skater Jump tutorial

The skater jump is an energetic move in which you leap sideways from one foot to the other. It raises your heart rate and builds balance and strength in your legs and glutes.

How to perform

  1. Stand on your right foot with a slight knee bend and your left foot behind you, slightly raised.
  2. Push off your right foot and leap to the left.
  3. Land softly on your left foot, bending the knee to absorb the impact.
  4. Bring your right foot behind your left and find your balance.
  5. Leap straight back to the right and keep alternating.
Breathing: Breathe steadily and rhythmically; do not hold your breath.

Key tips

  • To start, make small hops or step instead of jumping.
  • Swing your arms like a speed skater.
  • Land softly; your landing should be quiet.

Common mistakes

  • Landing with a straight knee.
  • Letting the knee cave inward on landing.
  • Making big jumps before you are ready.
Safety: If you have knee or ankle pain or carry a lot of extra weight, do the stepping version without jumping. Use a non-slip surface and see a doctor if it hurts.
