Dumbbell Side Bend tutorial

The dumbbell side bend is a simple exercise that strengthens the obliques and the muscles along the side of the lower back through controlled side bending. It helps build core stability and is easy to do at home with a single dumbbell.

How to perform

  1. Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in one hand with palm facing your body.
  2. Place your other hand on your hip or behind your head.
  3. Brace your core and keep your shoulders back.
  4. Slowly bend sideways toward the dumbbell until it reaches about knee level.
  5. Contract the obliques on the opposite side to return to standing.
  6. After finishing your reps, switch hands and work the other side.
Breathing: Inhale as you bend down and exhale as you return to standing.

Key tips

  • Move only in the side plane, not forward or backward.
  • Keep the tempo slow and avoid swinging.
  • Hold only one dumbbell per set so the opposite side truly works.

Common mistakes

  • Holding a dumbbell in each hand, which cancels out the load.
  • Twisting the torso or leaning forward on the way down.
  • Using a weight that is too heavy with a short range.
Safety: People with disc problems or low-back pain should start light with a small range and stop immediately if they feel shooting pain in the back or legs.
