Cable Wood Chop tutorial

The cable wood chop is a rotational exercise that strengthens the obliques and the whole core, mimicking movement patterns from sports like throwing and striking. Force is generated by the legs and hips and transferred through the core to the arms, building functional rotational power.

How to perform

  1. Set the pulley at the highest position and grab the handle with both hands.
  2. Stand side-on to the machine with feet slightly wider than shoulder width and knees softly bent.
  3. Hold your arms straight above the shoulder nearest the machine.
  4. Rotate your torso and hips to pull the handle diagonally down toward the opposite knee.
  5. Pivot on your back foot so your hips rotate with the movement.
  6. Return slowly and under control, then switch sides after the set.
Breathing: Exhale as you pull the handle down and inhale as you return.

Key tips

  • Keep your arms nearly straight and drive the rotation from your core.
  • Let your eyes follow the handle.
  • Resist on the way back and don't let the cable pull you.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the handle with the arms only, without rotating the torso.
  • Keeping the feet locked and twisting only through the spine.
  • Performing the movement too fast and jerky.
Safety: People with disc issues or spinal pain should start with very light weight and a small rotation range, and stop if pain appears.
