Tutorial World's Greatest Stretch

The world's greatest stretch is a dynamic combination movement that links a lunge, hip flexor stretch, hip opener and thoracic spine rotation into one sequence. It warms up several major joints in a short time and is a highly efficient pre-workout warm-up for intermediate trainees.

How to perform

  1. From standing, take a long step forward with your right foot into a lunge.
  2. Place your left hand on the floor beside your right foot and keep the back knee straight and lifted.
  3. Drop your right elbow toward the inside of your right foot and the floor, holding for 2 to 3 seconds.
  4. Open your right arm toward the ceiling, rotating your torso and following your hand with your eyes.
  5. Bring the right hand down, shift your hips back and straighten the front leg to stretch the hamstring.
  6. Return to standing and repeat the sequence on the other leg, 3 to 5 times per side.
Breathing: Breathe at a calm rhythm through each stage and exhale as you rotate your torso upward.

Key tips

  • Keep the back knee straight to stretch the front of the hip effectively.
  • Rotate through the upper back, not just by moving the arm.
  • Perform each stage with control and without rushing.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the back in the lunge
  • Rushing and skipping through the stages
  • Letting the front knee collapse inward
Safety: People with knee or back problems can rest the back knee on the floor and reduce the rotation range.
