Standing Dumbbell Calf Raise tutorial
The standing dumbbell calf raise is a simple calf exercise done by holding dumbbells and rising onto your toes. It can be done at home with minimal equipment and helps build ankle strength and endurance.
How to perform
- Hold the dumbbells at your sides with feet hip-width apart.
- If possible, place the balls of your feet on the edge of a step.
- Keep your body tall and your core braced.
- Raise your heels as high as possible and rise onto your toes.
- Squeeze your calves at the top and pause briefly.
- Lower your heels slowly until you feel a gentle calf stretch.
Breathing: Exhale as you rise and inhale as you lower.
Key tips
- For better balance, hold one dumbbell and support yourself on a wall with the other hand.
- Try it on one leg to increase intensity.
- Keep a slow rhythm and avoid bouncing.
Common mistakes
- Moving up and down quickly without pausing.
- Leaning the torso forward or back during the movement.
- Using a partial range of motion.
Safety: People with balance problems or Achilles pain should work next to a wall with light weight and stop if the heel hurts.
